Police Corporal Okoi Liyomo was fired by the Nigerian Police Force after using cutlass to beat a guy

Police Corporal Okoi Liyomo was fired by the Nigerian Police Force after he was discovered using a cutlass to beat a guy in Cross River State.

The footage of the policeman beating a man with a cutlass' flat side went viral on social media last week. The incident attracted the attention of the police, who swore to intervene.

The state's Ekori area is where the incident took place.

After the viral video went viral online, Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), ordered Liyomo's trial.

CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, the force's public relations officer, revealed in a tweet on Friday that Liyomo met with the IGP in Abuja on Thursday and would face trial for the incident.

PC Okoi Liyomo, the police officer shown in the viral video beating a guy in Cross Rivers State with a cutlass, has been hauled to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

"He met today with the IGP. His trial has been mandated by the IGP. I'm eagerly awaiting the trial's verdict.

"We'll let you know right away. We continue to reaffirm our commitment to sanitizing the NPF, saying there will be no tolerance for foolishness and that we will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, unprofessionalism, corruption, harassment, or impoliteness.

Limo, who joined the force in 2019, will be prosecuted after being fired.

His firing has sparked widespread outrage, especially among young people who have been complaining about police intimidation and extortion.

"The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, FDC, has expressed grave disappointment at the reports of brutality and extortion leveled against some police officers via various complaint channels available to the public, particularly on social media platforms," Olumuyiwa said in a statement on Monday.

As a result, the IGP has ordered all commanding commissioners of police and strategic commanders to guarantee that their subordinates are under rigorous control because any additional incidents of this sort will be treated seriously.

The Intelligence Response Team (IRT), the Special Tactical Squad (STS), and the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) Units have all undergone a comprehensive overhaul at the IGP's request to ensure that their operations are in line with the reason they were established and that they are operating at their peak efficiency and productivity in accordance with the mandate of the IGP's administration and public safety.

In order to ensure that the three units' operations are professional, active, and productive and do not violate the citizens' and other members of the public's fundamental rights, the IGP has instructed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau (AIG-FIB) to carry out supervisory roles over the three units.

In a similar vein, the Force fired Force No. 524503 PC Liyomo Okoi, who was assigned to the Cross Rivers Police Command's Ekori Divisional Headquarters, for severe misconduct that was shown in a go-viral video on July 31, 2022, in which he was seen flogging a guy with a machete. His termination is effective as of today, August 8, 2022.

As a result, the Inspector-General of Police has once again reaffirmed his determination to moral renewal, restoration of professional standards, and the improvement of the anti-corruption effort with a commitment to enshrining human rights-driven police in the nation. The IGP expressed optimism that the present reform will increase the effectiveness of the units and get rid of bad actors who don't follow the Nigeria Police Force's standard operating procedure.
